Drupal Themes News

Themes allow you to change the look and feel of your Drupal site. You can use themes contributed by others or create your own to share with the community. Contributed themes are not part of any official release and may not have optimized code/functionality for your purposes. You can also create a sub-theme of an existing theme. A sub-theme inherits a parent theme's resources. Read more about Sub-theme structure and inheritance. You can also view a full index of themes listing only their titles.

Volta

Sat, 09/07/2013 - 17:25

Volta started as a clone and is now a fork of Ohm, the demonstration theme bundled with Omega 4.x.

This theme is intended for hands-on educational and discovery purposes only. The goal is to facilitate tinkering and play toward developing best practices that you can carry forward into your next Omega 4.x project.

The drush omega-wizard subtheme process currently generates a blank slate of Ohm and Ohm remains in active development while Omega 4.x is production-ready. Use Volta as-is to play and mess around with some existing theme code to help you figure out how it works, how it differs from an omega-extended subtheme and what might work best for you.

Pull it apart. Move stuff around. Borrow an idea. Axe another. Break it and fix it and maybe start again in a different direction.

____________________________________________________________

Prerequisites: Digging into Sass and Ruby with a dash of RVM.

You could play around with the css and templates in this theme and completely ignore the Sass, though you wouldn't learn very much.

You could also install prerequisites individually from each project or corresponding repository. Note that Omega offers a process that's smart, easy and manageable.

Easy? Sure. It's as easy as getting RVM. Making sure you can run it as a function from the prompt. Run 'rvm requirements'. Run 'bundle install'.

See fubhy's post for background information about getting set up with Sass, Ruby and RVM. https://drupal.org/node/1936970

See my follow-up post about getting set up on Ubuntu.
https://drupal.org/node/2052955

Here's a 3 min screencast that covers installing everything required via rvm, including ruby and bundler on Ubuntu : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDuSrP3w06Y

Inspect Sass from within a browser: Libraries

Because this theme isn't made via drush, the libraries won't be automatically installed. You don't necessarily need these to play around with the theme, though if you really want to, you can manually install them into /volta/libraries individually. Or copy them over from a subtheme created using drush omega-wizard:

Bella

Fri, 09/06/2013 - 00:43

SUMMARY

The Bella theme is designed to be more configurable and more user-friendly than most standard Drupal themes, with an emphasis on the "little things" that most themes lack. Some examples range from being able to (easily) customize the breadcrumb separator, to being able to set whether or not user pictures are displayed in "teaser" mode, all the way to telling the theme to scan for custom css files so that modifications can be made to the theme without having to hard-code said modifications (because when you hard-code something, the next time the theme requires an update, all modifications will be lost). Not to mention hard-coding is a big no-no. Never hard-code stuff. It may seem convenient at the time, but ultimately it will make things much harder.

REQUIREMENTS

Drupal

INSTALLATION

Install the theme just as you normally would any other theme.

CONFIGURATION

Once installed, navigate to www.yoursite.com/?q=admin/appearance/settings/bella to configure the theme to your liking.
